Running EVE-NG on Proxmox host

Proxmox is not officially supported by EVE-NG, but it allows for host virtualisation and allows for over 16 cores per VM without a license, so it is worth a try.

This post uses the latest Proxmox 8.0.3 build, installed on a single SSD on my lab (cyberpunk2077/ HLL /Starfield/ whatever is the next AAA games which halts my CCIE studies!) machine, a Ryzen 9 5950X with 32GB of RAM.

The first check to make is to ensure that nested virtualisation is enabled, the flag we are interested in is located at:

cat /sys/module/kvm_amd/parameters/nested

In this current release it is now enabled by default:

Next we upload the EVE-NG community ISO:

Then create the VM. The only step we need to be mindful of is the CPU section where the CPU type must be set to ‘Host’

Once the install has completed and the VM rebooted, it will automatically update the system:

Eventually the update will complete and you can login with the default credentials root/ eve, at which point you can set the password, hostname, domain and IP address before rebooting for a third time. Finally you can get to log in:
